Project Management - art or profession?


Management means order, control, and this is more true of project management for the operational management. The operational management is more inclined to pop opportunities that day to day, requires a more flexible approach. Project management is more focused on one goal and that is to be achieved.

So order right, but not at any time, or too much and just the right proportions.

Too early to order a project will kill him. Need some 'chaos beginning to develop creative ideas. You need enthusiasm and not get it when it walks like a general. (More) towards the end of the project is important to nail things down and put more emphasis on discipline and concentration. All this can be planned.

Too much order stifles a project. Each project needs its own dynamics. Live a little 'of chaos, well you can not control everything. A look at current risk management is that we can not prevent everything, as long as we are able to control the fire. Perhaps this should be applied to project management. Leaving room for a little 'improvise.

Yet, structure, order and discipline, it is all part of the professional project manager. But there are limits in structuring the lives of your project members, the organization. It is all about finding the right balance. Even more for each organization reacts differently to the strict order and control.

The professional part can be learned and modeled by those who perform their role in the field. They learn to control, to make an assumption, to design and to say "NO".
But finding the right balance between order and discipline on the one hand and creativity and chaos, the other, which is more like an art ...
